Things That Make You Go Hmmm

As we grow up, things that happen to us can make us go hmmm and scratch our heads at these new symptoms. Some call it the aging process, others say it’s just Father Time catching up, and most of us just say it’s life.

There are ailments that pop up with symptoms that we have never had before.  What are some of these you might ask?  Well here are just a few.

  • The nerve in your tooth dies–seriously.  Warm liquids seem to make your tooth radiate, but not hurt.  This means that you need a root canal to stop this awful feeling.
  • You have sharp abdominal pain after eating.  You are now diagnosed as being lactose intolerant.  No more cheese, cream based entrees or ice cream.  In other words no milk based products for you.
  • Bloating from eating bread has started.  Not really all bread, but most.
  • Eye floaters start to bother you.  It’s kind of like you are swatting gnats.  They are harmless, but they are very annoying.
  • Heart palpitations which are scary.  Causes could be sugar, caffeine or alcohol.  You think to yourself which one do I have to give up?  I have become a decaf (yuck) coffee drinker, giving up most sugar except on birthdays and weddings (I love wedding cake).  There is no more chocolate for me since it is a double whammy with sugar and caffeine.  But there is a silver lining–wine is okay.

There are many other things that happen to us as we go through life, but I have a sorority sister who always finds the silver lining in things. The one silver lining I see from being lactose intolerant (and I hardly ever ate ice cream anyway), cutting out most sugar, most breads and caffeine is that I am able to control my weight and I can still have wine.

It’s my new normal, and it’s not so bad. We do what we have to do.  Remember “thisisyourbestyear”, and cheers!

I Went To A Garden Party

I keep singing the lyrics “I went to a garden party”.  It was set in the beautiful Garden of Eve at the home of Stephonia W. Roberts. I can honestly say I know why she named her backyard paradise the Garden of Eve–it was breathtaking.

The sign informed all guests to enter through the gate, and it seemed that you left the outside world outside when you entered.  Nature had decorated with so many plants and trees that not only shaded but served a health purpose.

Stephonia is the ower of Mrs Jacks Body Food, she is also an author and extraordinary spoken word poetess.  Her expertise in all things natural was on full display as she walked through her garden.

The atmosphere was that of ease and coolness in the hot Texas sun which had somehow given way to a cooling breeze, but Stephonia had natural cooling towels in case anyone needed them.  The seating areas were placed throughout the garden, but most of the attendees started off by walking the garden paths and discussing the many beautiful plants.

When the hors-d’oeuvres were passed, we were informed about the natural ingredients that were prepared so deliciously.  There were mocktails that were refreshing, and also cocktails that were light to the taste.  It seemed that God had cooled off the garden just for that moment.

The Garden of Eve was a wonderful way to end the day with great conversation, wonderful food, drink, and information.  But more than anything it was great to end the day in beauty and tranquility.

There Is Nothing Wrong With A Little Help

I must confess, that I could do rich very well.  I would be very nice to the people who worked for me–the housekeeper, landscaper (yes, I would have someone to plant the pretty flowers), the driver, the one who purchases the groceries, everyone.  But since it does not seem to be in the cards that I will ever be wealthy, I have decided that I deserve some help some of the time.

You can ask anyone who knows me, and they will tell you that I am a very good cook. When my children were young, I tried everything and had fun doing it.  Then one day they said the dreaded words “I don’t like that”.  Even then it was still fun, and I still enjoyed it.  As time has gone on, I have fallen in love with cooking shows.  If you ever watch the movie “Chef”, I even made his pasta dish after I went grocery shopping the following day.

There in part lies part of the problem that I face when it comes to cooking now.  There are basically three problems that make cooking unpleasant for me now.

  • Cooking the same thing time and time again.  It is easy to do.  It is just a habit that is hard to break and it makes everyone happy.
  • Grocery shopping is a job in itself.  When you do find a new recipe that you like, you have to go to the grocery store because there is a spice that it calls for, and you don’t have it.  Oh you can leave it out–it’s only a teaspoon, but that teaspoon matters. Then there are the questions, do I buy regular apples or organic apples?  What makes Central Market organic apples cost so much more than Walmart organic apples?  Are they even organic or is that just a fancy way to say pay more?
  • Cooking for two is so much harder than cooking for four.  There are recipes that are for two, but most are for at least a family of four.

I found the not so perfect solution to all three concerns.  I found *Blue Apron or my oldest daughter found it.  It does work.  First of all I noticed that she and my favorite son-in-law had lost weight.  She informed me that Blue Apron was portion controlled, and it did fill you up.  More importantly to me was the fact that all of the ingredients come with it, and the cost is reasonable.

I have enjoyed cooking new recipes for my hubby and myself, and even the girls like it.  I love the sides that come with it more than anything.  They are quick and easy.  The sides use ingredients that I usually have, but have never thought about putting together. My daughter wishes they would go one step further by chopping the ingredients too–that doesn’t bother me.  The meals are very tasty and the presentation is great too. The recipes are easy to follow–they have pictures to aid in this.  I have enjoyed every one of the meals with a few things that I would tweek if I did them again.

Since I can’t hire a chef, Blue Apron has become my personal chef, and it is worth it. I am not cooking the same things over and over and even going to the grocery store is more enjoyable.

*Blue Apron is not the only meal delivery service, I have friends who use others including Home Chef, Hello Fresh and Plated.  You might want to give one of them a try.  You do not have to receive a shipment every week, and there are vegetarian meals to choose from.

Nighty Night–8 Tips For A Better Sleep By Arianna Huffington

I am one of those people who leaves the card on my bed at the hotel because I want the linen changed each day (give me a discount, and I might not).  As I reached for the card at my last hotel stay, I read something that made a lot of sense. It was Arianna Huffington’s  8 Tips For A Better Sleep.

As I have matured sleep has become more important.  At one time I could function very well on 4 to 5 hours of sleep, but as I have matured I need more.  As women of a certain age sometimes our sleeping patterns can go into some craziness because of the dreaded menopause.  You know, you just can’t get to sleep, or you wake up and then you are just up for the rest of the night.

Will her 8 tips work?  I’m not sure, but I do agree with trying them.  There are some things that I probably won’t do.  I can drink coffee at 10 PM and then go to bed, and it does not bother me.

Take a look at the list and hopefully you will get some idea(s) on helping you get a good nights sleep–it’s worth a try.  Sleep does make you feel better and even look better. Ms. Huffington has written a book about the importance of sleep in our everyday life–The Sleep Revolution. It sounds like an interesting read.

Leaving Home

My uncle who is 96 recently left his once beautiful home for over 60 years and moved into an assisted living facility where he has his own one bedroom apartment. This move was one that was at times easy, and other times it was gut wrenching. As one of the people in charge of this move, I called on everything in me to get through this. This journey is one that many women (and men) of a certain age will be responsible for as we mature, and our parents, aunts and uncles find they can no longer stay in their home.

This process took a long time to complete with many different factors coming into consideration. I had not physically seen him for some time, but talked with regularly on the telephone.  He was forever telling me that he was doing just fine. Maybe physically he was, but for some unknown reason the state of his life was spiraling out of control.

When his brother, my uncle called to inform me that he had been taken to the hospital, but would be released in a few days I was a little concerned, but feeling okay since he could go to his home.  My cousin informed me that the house was no longer a home but something that was unsafe and unclean.

My cousins and I were not prepared for what we saw. Our once dapper, sharp dresser was thinner than usual which was not the shock, but he was disheveled, dirty and so unkept. This once proud man was sitting in this once grand house smiling his brilliant smile at my cousins and I.

Our mothers oldest brother could not live like this–we wouldn’t let it happen. The good part about this is that our uncle’s mind was as sharp as a tack.

Mentally there was nothing wrong and physically he was as fit as any 96-year-old could be. We immediately went into action. Since taking the truck keys would be hard and leaving home would be a hard sale, we went with home healthcare workers. The decision was made by everyone concerned, he even told us what time he wanted them to come each day–noon to 6.  While they were coming, we got together to find an assisted living home for him, one that he could make into his home.

This was not an easy chore, we did not need a nursing facility, we needed a place that had space, gave him independence, but still looked out for him.  The supervisor of the home healthcare workers was amazing, she gave us the name of someone and we were off.  We Uncle visiting Brookdale (1)visited three different ones, and all of us decided on the second one.  On the day that he was to make his visit to see if he like it, he was up, sharply dressed and ready.  He passed all of the assessments.  His only needed assistance was to make sure he took his 3 daily medications.  They could not believe he was 96 years of age.  He hadn’t had so many pictures taken in years–he was the man.

Even though the visit went great, there were still many hurdles to jump.  Some were more paperwork, doctor visits and more.  Moving day came, and the rain drops were the tears we all were feeling. To our surprise, he liked his new home!!

We know that there will be other obstacles that will come up, but we are so happy and pleased that our uncle, our mothers oldest brother is safe, clean, making new friends in his new home. He made us all remember “thisisyourbestyear”, and it is a blessing to have a great family that works together for the good of family. I love them all.

The Flu

Just a quick note to all of you who took the flu shot–I did too, and I still came down with the flu.  The good side to it (if there is a good side) is that I went to the doctor within 48 hours of the symptoms starting. I do not self-diagnose.

I thought I had a cold because of the stuffy nose and chills. When I couldn’t easily walk up two flights of stairs at work I knew something was wrong.  Since it was late in the day, I made an appointment at a local healthcare facility, and yes I did have to wait, but it was worth it.  The nurse swabbed my nose, and 15 minutes later the doctor delivered the news. She informed me that she would give me Tamiflu since I had come to her within 48 hours. She also informed me that the flu can be very dangerous, it can lead to pneumonia and other deadly complications.

I was told to take the meds, drink plenty of liquids and rest–I did. We as women never take the time to take care of ourselves, and we always diagnose our own medical conditions.

Remember “thisisyourbestyear”–go to the doctor when you don’t feel well.  By the way even with insurance Tamiflu may seem a little expensive, but feeling better is so worth it.

A Generational Problem–Childhood Obesity In America

As a woman of a certain age I remember being very active, no I didn’t say athletic. I was never very good at sports, but again I was active. In fact all the children of my generation were. As the first lady of the United States of America has noticed, our children are over weight. The one thing that she misses is that if we look at the parents of the children we will probably see  they are over weight also.

Back in the day children played outside with the kids in the neighborhood. They walked to the neighbor’s house, played pickup softball, stickball and such. There was no cell phone to call their friend, no Skype. You walked to the corner store and to school.

Our eating habits have changed because of convenience. My mother always cooked breakfast, and very seldom if ever did she ask my siblings and I what we wanted. My mother was a consumer science major so she was into nutrition, but all of the other mother’s on my street cooked breakfast also. There were no snack bars, very little sugary cereals, no sugary drink for breakfast, oatmeal was cooked on the stove not in the microwave. Now today our breakfast is eaten in the car on the go. It can be held in one hand and is never made fresh. Sugar is added to almost every product including the bottle water that most children drink. So when our children and/or grandchildren want breakfast we give them what they are familiar with—we ask them what they would like to eat. We watch as they eat bowl after bowl of sugary cereal often adding more sugar to the mixture. In fact most of them are eating on the average of 2 to 3 servings at one sitting.

The media tells us we as a nation are drinking less soda than in the past, BUT it fails to tell us that we are drinking more energy drinks, coffee beverages and other concoctions that are full of sugar or high fructose syrup.

We all say that we microwave and/or buy fash food because we don’t have the time to cook, but is that the reason or are we just dare I say “lazy”. Remember when you learned to read, you practiced while your mother cooked dinner. There was no such thing as a “snack”, candy was a treat, and soda was never with a meal.

There was basically no such thing as a personal trainer to get you in shape. There was no need. You walked to your friends home, you walked to school—even if you rode the bus, you still had a distance to walk, and if it were raining, you ran. As a child you walked to the corner store or rode your bike. Sometimes you even put your younger sibling on the back and rode with them. You ran up and down hills.  But playing has changed, we’ve gone from pickup games, to play dates to  Skyping your play date. We’ve gone from never going in the house, to never leaving the house. Remember when a can of soda was considered two servings, and now it’s one serving.

Things have changed, but we as parents and grandparents can assist in eliminating this problem of obesity.  There can be wholesome meals prepared in less than 30 minutes, and you can purchase wholesome meals for the price of 5 hamburgers, fries and soft drinks.  There can be after dinner family walks, Saturday morning walks around the track at the local school.  There are free workout videos on cable television. As the adult in the house we can monitor what foods come into the house.

The are consequences of childhood obesity are many.  There is heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and much more.  The emotional toll is sometimes harder for children than the health issues.
