The First Lady shows us part of her fitness routine. As a woman of a certain age, she is amazing!! Remember “thisisyourbestyear”. Let’s Move!
Remember when women were limited to certain careers? I can, and they were very good careers, but this is no longer the case. At the Mayor’s Luncheon benefitting the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) I ran into many women with so many fascinating careers. Some were just staring their careers while others were onto their second even third careers, and even others were reinventing themselves.
A few of the women I met are below. At the top left is Dr. Tahita Fulkerson, president of the Trinity River Campus of Tarrant County College (my boss). The top right picture is of Ms. Gyna Bivens, Fort Worth City Council Member for District 5. Ms. Cindi B. on air personality at BOOM 94.5 is at the left. At the bottom right is the Honorable Betsy Price, Mayor of Fort Worth.
Remember “thisisyourbestyear”. Your career–your choice. The mold has been broken.
Two women that continue to inspire me are Geraldine Ferraro, the first woman to be nominated to be vice president of the United States, and Shirley Chisholm the first African-American to be a major party candidate for president of the United States. Neither of these women won their political races, but I can just image what they had to go through not only from men, but from women who believed they should stay in a “woman’s place”. They paved the way.
We all have women who have inspired us in some form or fashion, tell us about them.
Remember “thisisyourbestyear”! Let’s not only celebrate, let’s honor women all year.
Because of those that paved the way, we are able to do whatever we desire.
Don’t forget to tell us about the women who have inspired you.

Women of a Certain Age
To those girls blessed enough to have turned 50
This is a new lease on life
What we must first realize is that the world does not define us! God’s word does. We will not sit down until we have been called up.
We shall teach, exhort and instruct our young daughters, through this charge –
We are vibrant, as they shall be, resilient, exuberant, happy, and wealthy in God’s resources, rich in His Glory, wise in His knowledge and yes we still dance!
Daughters of Zion.
Women there is work to do! Get fit! Get active!
Dance! And get out there!

Women of a Certain Age
The amazing Ms. Darlene Love is doing Christmas in Texas. This woman of a certain age is about to show Texas what real “singing” is. On December 2, 2014 Darlene will bring her vocal talents to the Eisemann Center for the Performing Arts located in Richardson, TX (next to Dallas). The Eisemann Center is a beautiful venue for an intimate concert.
It seems that we’ve always heard Ms. Love singing even when she was not given credit for her vocals. We remember seeing her singing in numerous girl groups. She has one of those voices that when you heard it, you immediately knew who it belonged to. For a number of years (about 21), she has been the reason that many people tune in to the David Letterman Show during the Christmas Holidays where she serenades David and us with “Baby Please Come Home”.
My friends and I will be sitting front and center in Richardson, TX to hear a talent that gets better with age. I hope she is ready for one big happy sing-a-long.
As David Letterman goes into retirement, I hope that another late night host invites Ms. Love to sing on any day, but especially during Christmas–it’s one of my traditions–singing along with her. To find out if Ms. Love is coming near you go to: http://darleneloveworld.com/upcoming-events/
Remember “thisisyourbestyear”! See you at the concert!
*If you have not seen her in the movie “20 Feet From Stardom”, make it a point to see it.
What is too old?
Thank you for a successful year–“thisisyourbestyear” was read in 75 countries! I know 2013 will be even better. Remember “thisisyourbestyear”. This year don’t make ANY RESOLUTIONS!!! Seriously, just live your life the best you can–“THISISYOURBESTYEAR”!!!
Here’s an excerpt:
600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 3,500 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 6 years to get that many views.
I am not a rocking grandmother. I first heard that from my mother, and I now know what she meant. As women of a certain age we are often thought of as babysitters for every occasion–not so.
Having said that I have a date this weekend with the cutest grandchild in the world–mine.
Joey and Honey (that’s me) are going to have so much fun this weekend. I enjoy my time with my baby on my time.
Remember “thisisyourbestyear”. Enjoy your grandchildren, make your time with them special.
My baby sister wanted to celebrate her birthday close to home so off to Big D we went. Spending the weekend at Bailey’s Uptown Inn. A little bit tired from last weekend
and work this week, but she is my baby sis. Even cooked a couple of times this week–got to keep hubby happy. Went to exercise class too–got to try to keep in shape because I am a woman if a certain age. Remember “thisisyour(my)bestyear”.
Welcome to “thisisyourbestyear”! You and I are on this journey together. Together and collectively, we will give suggestions on living life to the fullest. This is a blog for women who thought that when they reached this age, life was over. This is for all of those women who thought their mothers were old at this age–well they may have been, but that’s not the case anymore.
We will discuss everything from health, beauty, faith, life, children, grandchildren, exercise, careers, retirement, starting all over again in love and/or career. We will talk about learning the word no, taking time to be who we are. With this blog we will have fun, we will talk fashion, food, travel and all kinds of products–in other words, we’re going to talk about us.
You can always email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and see all the things we are doing by visiting us at thisisyourbestyear on these social media sites–Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr and YouTube. We are also on Twitter at: thisisyourbestyear@mariciajohns.
Let’s get excited ladies, and stay tuned. Remember–“THIS IS YOUR BEST YEAR”!
