The World In A Box

See, smell and taste the world through food–sounds interesting doesn’t it.  You can do it! Every time I fly I take a look at the airline magazine, and try to do the puzzles.  This time while flying on American Airlines I ran across an article on Try The World and it caught my attention.

One thing that it seems most people can agree on is food.  The world is always interested in trying new and exotic taste.  Home cooks are trying to amp up their standard recipes by using different herbs and spices.  Try The World gives  you that opportunity in a cute box.

The box not only comes with ingredients, it comes with recipes, and a cultural guide to the country that the box features. If you only want snack foods, you can order their snack boxes.  My box is shown below–it came from Thailand.  My sister and I could not wait to taste some of the things that came in it.  Our first try was the Coconut Flower Syrup. She put it in tea and I tried it on toast.  We gave it 2 thumbs up. We’re kind of on a schedule to try the other items.  Each trying it a different way–Soft Dried Jackfruit is next.

You can find out more about this wonderful taste experience by going to Try The World and starting your adventure.  It’s the next best thing to traveling there.

5 Things That Will Help You Have A Great Vacation

In my lifetime there have been good vacations, bad vacations and great ones.  I’ve learned how to make them great.  There are certain things that work for me, and have made my vacations truly vacations–not just trips. Let’s take a look at the top 5.

  • Decide where you are going.  Seems strange, but you must know where you are going.  This is so important, it will affect everything else you do.  All of California is not the same–the beach in Texas is not the beach in South Carolina.  One Hawaiian island is not the same as the other one. Do you want hot or cold or somewhere in between? Do you want to sightsee, be active, meditate, be on the go every minute, rest by the ocean all day while reading? Do your research.
  • Decide how long you want to vacation.  I’ve read about people who have vacationed for a couple of days to a couple of months.  You have to decide, and you must include travel time, hotel check-in and check-out times, and one that we forget–departure time.  Sometimes we check-out, and have nothing to do but sit at the airport and wait.
  • Transportation is one factor that we tend to forget.  As women of a certain age, we may not have the children to take along, but some of you might be taking the grandchildren.  Roadtrips can be the best if you are traveling with the right people.  Do you have time to ride the train?  It’s never on time.  There are charter buses.  Remember flying is not the flying of old.  Sometimes the people look like they are on the bus (really), the costs for each piece of luggage adds to the cost of the vacation, and the time it takes to get through the check-in procedure can start your vacation off badly.
  • What type of accommodations do you want to have during your vacation?  Are you going to have a single room, a suite, is breakfast included?  Maybe you would like a timeshare. Maybe you want all-inclusive, one with no children, one that does or does not allow pets.  I don’t do colored bedspreads or pets–that’s just me. Please remember that the internet makes almost everything look picture perfect.
  • Most Importantly!! Who are you going with?  Are you traveling with your significant other, girlfriends, which girlfriends (some of your friends may not get along, or they like different things) or grown children?  You may be going to your favorite place, but who you go with can change everything. This will determine all of the other things you need to do. It may seem strange, but know how much they like to spend on dining out.  Do they get up in the morning with the television on, do they go to bed early?  Do they hog the bathroom?  Which one of you has to sleep with the light on, music going, television on? You know the adage, “you don’t someone until you live with them”, well try traveling with them.

These are just a few of the things that I have found to be helpful when planning a vacation.  You may have others, please share so that we can all have a great vacation.

Great VacationRemember “thisisyourbestyear”.  Vacations should be stress free.

It has been a wonderful year, talking and discussing so many different topics with you the readers.  Your comments have been funny, informative, creative and given me ideas of other topics.  “thisisyourbestyear” is about us and our journey.

Our top 5 posts of 2015 are as varied as you the readers, but in each one of them there is a strong woman of a certain age somewhere.  Here’s the list.

  • #5  A House Where “Sunny” Shines Bright  Mrs. Sunny Graham is a dynamic businesswoman, entrepreneur, wife and mother.  Her most endearing quality was that she is an extraordinary mentor who is always giving back.  Her story is a great American story of hard work and determination.   Her post is:  http://thisisyourbestyear.com/2015/11/05/a-house-where-sunny-shines-bright/

  • #1 Old Ladies And Crazies  Can I just say that the old, crazy ladies in the post are my heroes.  They epitomize what “thisisyourbestyear” is about.  We may be women of a certain age, but we are not the same.  We do not fit a particular mold.  Mrs. Inda Lou Lambert Schell did not let the death of her husband deter her, she decided to travel just like they had planned.  She went on with her life.  Her post is:  http://thisisyourbestyear.com/2015/07/05/old-ladies-and-crazies/
Remember “thisisyourbestyear”!  Women of a certain age are________(you fill in the blank).

Old Ladies and Crazies

I love the story in the video below.  Each Sunday morning I tape Sunday Morning on CBS to watch after church.  I started watching when Charles Kuralt was the host.  Each time he went “On the Road” in his van, it seemed that I was traveling with him.  Over the years I’ve taken road trips with family and friends–they have been some of the best adventures.  When I saw this segment on a woman of a certain age, Inda Lou Lambert Schell who was also a fan of Charles Kuralt and his favorite places from “On the Road”, I knew it would be fun to watch.

Miss Lou and her husband of over 50 years had thought about going to some of Charles Kuralt’s favorite places that he had written about in his book “Charles Kuralt’s America” which featured 12 of his favorite places in America.  As would happen Miss Lou’s husband passed away, but she was not to be deterred.  She enlisted the assistance of her sister, informed her children that she was about to spend their inheritance, and with their blessings she and her sister set out to spend a month in each of the 12 places featured in the book.  Even with her sister getting ill and having to go home, Miss Lou completed her journey, even writing a book “Revisiting America”.

As Miss Lou says “God takes care of old ladies and crazies”.  What’s your excuse for not doing something out of the norm that you have always wanted to do.  Remember “thisisyourbestyear”–God takes care of us all.

Let’s Move And Try An Adventure

groupon 2It’s about to be summer, and we all wish for the same thing–we want to do something that we’ve never done before.  We want to try something new.  Well, just do it.

Cost is always a factor in what we do, and sometimes as women of a certain age, we may be on a fixed income.  There are ways that can cut the cost in just about a half or more.  Try some of the deals you find online with such sites as Groupon, Living Social. Amazon Local and more.Living Social

I absolutely love these sites, especially for trying things that I have never done, or things that I know that I only need a certain number of visits to accomplish.  They have everything from food, to hotel stays, to exercise and more.

amazon 1My girlfriends and I have gone Segway touring for half the regular cost.  We’ve gone ziplining.  I even had one for horse back riding.  I like Groupon because if something happens, and the service is cancelled for some reason, they credit your account.

While on a trip to Chicago, I did a Segway tour with another couple who told me that what they paid for two people I had paid for one person to do the tour.  They informed me that when they scheduled a trip, they always checked with these (Groupon, Living Social, Amazon Local) sites to see if there was a deal they could use.  So I have begun to do this also.  It’s really simple–when you book your trip, you then go to the site of your choice to see if there is anything that strikes your interest such as a restaurant that you would like to visit or a museum and such.  You then call to make sure you can get the reservation, then you get your deal–it saves you money, and  you can now do more on your trip.

I’ve gone to day spas, restaurants, tours, museums and more while on trips.  While at home, I’ve taken Sushi making classes, done  wine tasting, yoga, salt therapy,  kickboxing, massages and even gotten my house cleaned. My girlfriends want to go kayaking, but so far I am not the one, but who knows.

Remember “thisisyourbestyear”.   Try something different–try an adventure!

Mega Bus Traveling Part 2

image

Leaving Austin. Made it in a little over three hours. About the same as driving. It has been nice and still very quiet. Young lady across from me said to rent a car.was going to cost her about $75. The Mega Bus was less than $20 round trip. She has slept most of the way. We are near UT campus picking up students. Still not crowded.
