Let’s Move And Try An Adventure

groupon 2It’s about to be summer, and we all wish for the same thing–we want to do something that we’ve never done before.  We want to try something new.  Well, just do it.

Cost is always a factor in what we do, and sometimes as women of a certain age, we may be on a fixed income.  There are ways that can cut the cost in just about a half or more.  Try some of the deals you find online with such sites as Groupon, Living Social. Amazon Local and more.Living Social

I absolutely love these sites, especially for trying things that I have never done, or things that I know that I only need a certain number of visits to accomplish.  They have everything from food, to hotel stays, to exercise and more.

amazon 1My girlfriends and I have gone Segway touring for half the regular cost.  We’ve gone ziplining.  I even had one for horse back riding.  I like Groupon because if something happens, and the service is cancelled for some reason, they credit your account.

While on a trip to Chicago, I did a Segway tour with another couple who told me that what they paid for two people I had paid for one person to do the tour.  They informed me that when they scheduled a trip, they always checked with these (Groupon, Living Social, Amazon Local) sites to see if there was a deal they could use.  So I have begun to do this also.  It’s really simple–when you book your trip, you then go to the site of your choice to see if there is anything that strikes your interest such as a restaurant that you would like to visit or a museum and such.  You then call to make sure you can get the reservation, then you get your deal–it saves you money, and  you can now do more on your trip.

I’ve gone to day spas, restaurants, tours, museums and more while on trips.  While at home, I’ve taken Sushi making classes, done  wine tasting, yoga, salt therapy,  kickboxing, massages and even gotten my house cleaned. My girlfriends want to go kayaking, but so far I am not the one, but who knows.

How To Keep More Of The Income You Get In Retirement

How much  income do you get on paper, and how much do you actually get–you know after taxes? As women of a certain age, some of us will continue to work, some will retire completely, but all of us want to live a lifestyle similar to the life we are now accustomed to. Here is a conversation on this subject.

(taken directly from USA Today Money) A podcast featuring telephone interviews by Robert Powell with David Blanchett, the head of retirement research for Morningstar Investment Management in Chicago and co-author of Alpha, Beta, and Now…Gamma; Robert Keebler, a partner with Keebler & Associates in Green Bay, Wis.; and William Raabe, a professor at the University of Wisconsin in Whitewater, Wisc. The topic: How to create tax-efficient income in retirement.

We all can remember our fist paycheck, and the shock of seeing net income after taxes.  We’d heard about it in school, but looking at it was a great shock. Let’s not “have” to go to work to make ends meet in retirement.  Let’s go to work because we are good at it, and we want to work.

Women and Retirement–Good Article

I love it when I ask my students at what age do they plan to retire.  I get a wide variety of answers–from 35 to 75. There are even young ladies who profess they will never work, so therefore they will never retire.

One of my favorite columnist, Mr. Rodney Brooks who is published in the USA Today among other publications had a wonderful article on women and retirement that I thought you might like.  Take a look and contemplate on what Mr. Brooks has to say.  Traveling, taking classes and so much more will probably cost more than you think.

Update–Birkenstocks Repaired

On May 30, 2013, I posted “In With The New Fixing The Old”. It was about repairing my Birkenstock sandals for a fraction of what a new pair would cost. The outcome is below. Take a look.

Before the repair–looking sad.

After repair–looking good.

The cost to repair was $45. They feel really comfortable.  If you have a pair of Birkenstocks that need a little love and care, find an authorized Birkenstock shoe store. They can give you another 5 or 6 years worth of good comfort.

In the Fort Worth, Texas area try Take 5 Birkenstock on Camp Bowie Boulevard.
