A Train Ride and Michelle Obama

The last two weeks have been hectic, fun, entertaining filled with laughter, good conversation and more. This post won’t be long since the pictures will speak for themselves.

We started out with a train ride to the Grapevine Mainstreet Arts Fest aboard the Trinity Metro from the T&P station in Fort Worth. We were able to meet new friends and have a great time walking Main Street, talking with the vendors, eating the food samples and more. Hopefully on our next excursion you will be able to join us.

The discussion of the Michelle Obama book “Becoming” that we held at Leaves Book and Tea Shop, lived up to everyone’s expectations. The participants sipped their ice tea while they discussed “Becoming” and life itself. There were no right or wrong answers which made it interesting. Once again we were able to connect with women that we didn’t know.

The participants were given a sway bag that contained items from Sephora (located on University). After receiving their bags, they were then presented with other items to add to their sway bags. Women entrepreneurs were then given a moment to tell about their businesses and products. They then had a surprise for each lady. Each participant received a beautiful gift box with a lovely bracelet in it from Melba Gordon Jones of Paparazzi Accessories. Ruby Powell of Ageless Perfection Skincare gave each of the ladies’ skincare products that were packaged in a lovely satchel. Beverly Gunter of Kay’s Hot Water Cornbread Mix bought samples to taste (they went fast), and then gave each lady a package of mix. Each of the entrepreneurs received a gift from Danette Wicker of Danette’s Urban Oasis. The ladies were then given tissue paper and ribbon to complete their sway bag.

Hope you can join us for our next event. Step out of your comfort zone because “thisisyourbestyear”.

Looking For A Great Girls Outing–Try the Byron Nelson Golf Tournament

First of all let me give you this disclaimer before you read any further.  This will be the last year that the Byron Nelson Golf Tournament will be held at The Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas.  It will now move to Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas.

That being said “the last round” was an amazing girls getaway for those that love golf, like golf, kind of like golf and those that don’t know anything about golf.  There is so much  more to a golf tournament than golf.

At the beautiful Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas, maybe it was because it was the “last round” everything was done to perfection.  Even the parking was convenient.

For those that love golf, there were the top players on the PGA participating with some surprises along the way.  There was so much to do, see, eat, drink and enjoy.

Let’s get started first with the resort.  If you were fortunate enough you may have been able to snag a villa with a view of the course from the balcony.  We saw quite a few ladies and gentlemen doing just that. Some had their cocktails and food to enjoy while watching the tournament.

Just walking around was peaceful and beautiful.  The weather for the most part was very nice.  The sponsors tents were great places to stop and enjoy food, drink and great conversation while watching the action on the course. The Grey Goose tent had signature cocktails for enjoyment with cute giveaway glasses. While you sipped your cocktail there was always someone to discuss golf on every level–learning can be fun!

Of course there was the fashion to take in as there is every year at the Byron Nelson; though this year the fashions seemed to be more individualized (no set pattern).  The city of Irving had great events from pictures, to prizes.  You could go inside the AT&T booth and drive a simulator and much more. Cadillac, the official car had their newest models on display for your viewing pleasure.

There were activities in the hotel for those that wanted to relax a bit more.  There was the Well and Being Spa in the hotel. If you felt that you didn’t get enough exercise walking the course they have 4 indoor tennis courts, a massive workout facility, squash courts and more.

The Byron Nelson Golf Tournament at The Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas in Las Colinas has something for everyone.  It made a great girls getaway. For those that don’t know a lot about golf, it is a great way to learn–it’s as easy as talking to the person next to you.  You might even enjoy it.

Beyond Words–Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth Presents Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic

From September 20, 2015 to January 10, 2016 the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (Texas) will be presenting the art work of Kehinde Wiley.  Mr. Wiley has been a professional artist for about 14 years, but he has been an artist for most of his 38 years.

The art lovers of Fort Worth and Tarrant County came out for a one of a kind book signing. The lecture that proceeded the book signing was one of the most successful the museum has held.  There was standing room only in the main hall with just as many being seated in Café Modern. All were informed and entertained by Kehinde’s conversation with Eugenie Tsai of the Brooklyn Museum.

The exhibition–Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic showcases about 60 of Kehinde’s body of work.  The exhibition starts with a piece painted just before his graduation from Yale University and gives you some background into his life as an African-American male.

When you visit the exhibition, you will find yourself stepping up closely to examine the pieces, then stepping back to see them from a different angle.  There are huge paintings, smaller paintings, sculptures and one of my favorites–beautiful stained glass pieces. I suggest that you take the guided tour (at least the first time you go, you will go back again). The guided tour will give you insight into Kehinde’s vision, and how it has evolved.

To find out more about the world-famous Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth go to:  You can also read more about Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic at

As I tell everyone, there may be bigger (modern art museums), but there are none better than the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (Texas).

Summer In Winter Talking Grown Folk

Looking out of the window, I can see the snow falling.  I have my fireplace going and I’m talking Summer–Summer Selby-Drew that is.  To top it off, Summer and I are talking “Grown Folk” conversation.

You never know who you are going to meet or who might inform you of something or someone interesting. While attending a dinner sponsored by the American Institute of Wine and Food,  I met a very interesting couple–the lovely actress Carolyn Wickwire and her husband Dennis West.  After talking about “thisisyourbestyear” they informed me I should reach out to Ms. Summer Selby-Drew because we had a lot in common.  They were so right.

Summer has moved from the DFW area and is now residing in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. So we met over the net and telephone.  While researching Summer, I immediately found out that she is a woman of “many” talents.  This woman of a certain age has worn so many different types of hats, but she knew from an early age that she wanted to be in the field of entertainment.  She just needed to map out her journey, and what a journey it continues to be.

She has done it all in the field of entertainment.  Summer is an acclaimed actress with stage, television and movie credits.  She has even ventured into voice overs. She is a producer/creator of the television show “Grown Folk” which really sparked my interest because of the market it is aimed toward.  “Grown Folk” is a talk show aimed at women of a certain age.  With a diverse cast, they discuss everything from clothing, cosmetic surgery, lifestyles and more. It fills a much-needed gap in the talk show market. “Grown Folk” has one successful season under its belt.  Since relocating Summer is trying to find a new home for “Grown Folk” in the hopes that it can get syndicated.

Head Ladies In Charge
Head Ladies In Charge

As if all of the above were not enough to keep her busy, she has recently become a published author in the book “Head Ladies in Charge”.  She was selected to be one of the ladies featured in a book that let’s them write the story of their journey to success.  Another book  is already in the works.

Living on the Gulf Coast is not your entertainment mecca, but Summer is a lady that knows how to work it.  “Grown Folk” has a wonderful saying that epitomizes what I got from my interview with Summer, and it goes “Balance out your TV viewing–watch us grown up women work it”.  Summer Selby-Drew is working it!

This Week

Started my week off by giving back. My church held it’s annual Rev. Jerome B. Price Scholarship Day–I am one of the committee members.  This scholarship is given to every high school senior at Carter Metroplitan CME Church who participates in church activities. Last year we had 3 young men, and this year we have 4 young ladies. Two of the  young men were able to come home and speak to the church, and the other one sent a statement to be read. The young ladies all participated in morning worship. It was a beautiful service for the memory of a beautiful man.

Later on that day I finished my planting. The flowers were already planted, but this year I also wanted to grow herbs.

Did I forget to say between all of this I cooked dinner?  Our youngest had gone to church with us so we had a wonderful time with her.

Later on I worked on a piece that my friend needs in her pursuit of being elected to the Arlington ISD school board. Trying to answer a thought-provoking question in 250 words or less is hard.

This week I will go to a Republican women’s luncheon as her surrogate to read a statement from her.  Can you believe it–me neither.

I have to go to exercise class since I didn’t make it Friday.  Hopefully he will have time to train me on Thursday too or early on Friday because I’m taking a girlfriends weekend to Austin with two of my college roommates.

There is also my professional life that needs attention too. For some reason I decided to throw something new into my classes, but I am sure it will work–maybe.

First though there is the hubby. I must make time to stop and smell the roses with him.

Life is busy, and most of the time I like it that way. Remember “thisisyourbestyear”.

Who Knew?

Who knew there were so many varieties of extra virgin olive oil?  I didn’t and neither did some of my best girlfriends.  We decided to learn more; so off we went to an olive oil tasting at The Virgin Olive Oiler here in Ft.Worth.

It was an amazing, entertaining and informative event.  Just the store itself captured our curiosity.  Everywhere we turned there were shiny barrel like containers filled with many varieties of extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

We were given a really interesting talk on the ins and outs of extra virgin olive oil. We asked so many questions, but Charles the owner seemed eager for even more questions. From information about the health benefits of extra virgin olive oil to the tasting of the varieties–everything was explained.

Charles instructed us on the correct way to taste, and then we started tasting. We tasted from light to bold varieties. We mixed varieties of balsamic vinegar to varieties of extra virgin olive oil–comparing each one.  We were also served horderves with of course some type of extra virgin olive and balsamic vinegar complimenting each dish.

Each one of us left with a purchase and vowed to be back.

Today we had good food and wine with good friends, and we all learned something.  Remember “thisisyourbestyear”.
