Second Chances–We All Deserve One

The Texas Offenders Reentry Initiative (TORI) is a 12 month program that strives to assist offenders once they are released from prison.  The program helps clients with basic needs such as finding meaningful employment and housing.  One thing that sets TORI apart from other such programs is their offering of mentorship and spiritual guidance.

TORI is a spin-off of the Potter’s House prison ministry and was started in 2004 by Bishop T. D. Jakes.  The initiative has serviced over 7,000 offenders both male and female with only 8 to 10 percent returning to prison.

The 12 month program culminated with a graduation ceremony with pomp and circumstance.  Judge Greg Mathis of television fame was the graduation speaker this year.

Second chances should be earned, and the graduates of TORI have earned theirs.  Here’s hoping they remember “thisis(their)yourbestyear”.

This is my best year ever, and it can be yours too. When I turned 40, I thought it was the end of life as I knew it. When I turned 50, I knew it was the end. It was the end, the end of that year--nothing more and nothing less. I've retired, gone to another career, started a business, and have kept writing. I've taken classes including glass blowing, swing dancing and so much more. I'm making each year, my best year.

  1. That is an amazing record, only 8-10 returned to prison out of over 7,000 served! Truly a program worth replicating.   Edwina
