Put On Some Pink For A Great Cause

It’s time to put on your pink and get ready to see some great fashion, participate in great raffles, but most of all get ready to help the women of North Texas get the medical attention they deserve.

“Puttin on the Pink”  is hosted by the Kupferle Health Board of the Texas Health Resources Foundation.  The proceeds from this fashion luncheon helps fund their mobile unit.  This mobile unit is the doctor’s office on wheels that provides much needed service to women who might otherwise not have access to healthcare.

This year’s event is co-chaired by Sharon Crockett and Heather Senter.  These ladies have worked hard to make sure this years event continues the legacy that the volunteers started years ago to raise awareness of the mobile unit so that all women in the North Texas area have the opportunity to get the services they need.

Sharon became involved in the Puttin on the Pink when she learned that her best friend was diagnosed with breast cancer.   She soon realized that almost everyone knew someone who has been affected by some form of cancer.  Realizing that some people don’t know about the medical exam they should take, or they knew but didn’t have resources they needed to attain these services she knew she had to try and make a difference.

At the luncheon many men and women will learn about the services the mobile unit offers–these people will get the information out to many more people.  They will be able to tell that the mobile unit does:

  • Breast Cancer Screening Mammogram
  • Clinical Breast Examination
  • Cervical Cancer Screening
  • Sink Cancer Screening
  • Colon Cancer Screening
  • There is also Prostate Cancer Screening for men

This years’ Puttin on the Pink fashion luncheon will be held at the Fort Worth Convention Center on April 5, starting with a reception at 10:30 with the fashion luncheon at 11:30.

The Ladder Alliance–The Ladder To Independence

When most people think of domestic violence they generally think of black eyes, concussions, broken arms and more.  They think of a man and a woman physically fighting with the children crying. This falsehood tends to make all of us think that we don’t know anyone who is being abused, but we do.  There is emotional abuse.  Remember when our mother would tell us that “words hurt”.  They do, and so many victims (usually women) are victims of a verbal and emotional domestic abuse, not physical abuse. Most victims think there is no one out there to help them, but there are a number of places that are available

Even as the victims seek assistance, they seek a way for a fulfilled life after leaving the abuser.  They are looking for a ladder to help them climb out of a life that has left them with little or no job skills to support themselves and sometimes their children.  They are looking for the The Laddder Alliance.

The Ladder Alliance provides women domestic violence victims or low-income women with employment skills that will enable them to be self-reliant, independent and to lead successful lives. They are enrolled in classes that are taught by professional educators and business people. Their classes cover computer, professional and life skills that include Excel, professional writing and customer service.

This program offers a full size clothing boutique with new and gently used professional clothing that are “purchased” by the students not with money, but earned professional rewards (being on time, assignments, etc.). There is also childcare assistance and even homework assistance for the children if needed.

The Ladder Alliance offers several programs.  They offer basic computer skills training and professional office skills training. The cost for this is $20 or less covering all course material.

To find out more about any of the programs, the sites where classes are available and any other questions, call 817.834.2100 or go to Ladder Alliance.  There are several volunteer opportunities available.

Addendum To 5 Tips For A Great Vacation

Keep living, and you will keep learning. This is just a small addendum to my 5 tips for having a great vacation especially when you are away for more than 5 days.

Again it will depend on your accommodations. I don’t like bringing back luggage filled with dirty clothing. When staying at timeshares there are laundry facilities so there are no worries. But what if you are staying somewhere where there are no laundry facilities or you just don’t want to do laundry? Here is my suggestion.

  • Throw Away Clothing! What am I talking about? You know that blouse, those pants, that skirt, dress and yes that underwear that has been sitting in the closet or drawer for some time. Wear it and throw it away. About once a year when I was wearing pantyhose on a daily basis I would go through the drawer they were in and throw away every pair that was open, and start again.

My new rule since having Lifestyle Consierge help me get my closets and drawers organized is when something new comes in, something old or not being used comes out. If you do the throw away clothing then you will have room in your luggage for all of the great new stuff, or at least you have started cleaning your closets and drawers. It’s a win-win situation.

Remember “thisyourbestyear” why spend it doing laundry after your great vacation?

You May Be The Same Size, But…

I love it when people say they are the same size they were way back when. At this stage of life I am probably about the same size I was before l had children. Even saying that the weight is distributed differently, you know not sitting like it use to unless of course you have visited your local cosmetic guru to have some work done, then it is probably sitting higher.

As we have become women of a certain age, we don’t want to look like our mothers and Lord forgive us surely not like our grandmothers when they were our age. Sadly though for most of us we can’t look the way our daughters and granddaughters look. Seriously Beyonce and her mom may be about the same size, but there is almost a 30 year age difference. One is Blue Ivy’s mom and the other is her grandmother.

Remember when you go shopping the sales lady is nice, but her job is to sell. She may tell you that you can pull something off, and you want to believe you can, but please look in the mirror. As we mature unless we are a dancer, have good genes or have always exercised and even then we may not avoid the inevitable–we sometimes just have to let some outfits go. Hey it may be time to try something new.

Remember “thisisyourbestyear”.  Same size or not, check the mirror before you leave home.

The Saga Of The Bra Fitting

When you decide that  you are going to let your new gray neighbors meet the rest of the neighborhood, you must take other things into consideration–jewelry, attitude, clothing fit and more.  Gray hair does not make you look old, but if you have gray hair and the girls (breasts) are not bra fit 4sitting right, then you need to find your correct bra size.

I can remember when Oprah had a person who came on the show and measured her–even Oprah needed some help.  So if Ms. O needs a little help, maybe we do to.

After a month of mammograms, sonograms and MRI’s I decided that the “girls” could use a new dress or two. What I did was to go to a store–Dillard’s to find a person to measure me correctly.  You need someone who has the time to actually measure you, and talk with you about what you are looking far.

All women know that  shoe size changes because our feet change.  The maker of the shoes may make them differently.  Maybe you gained and/or lost weight, that affects your shoe size.  The maker of the shoes could be the problem.  You can wear one size by one designer, but another size with another designer. That’s the way it is in bra sizing. You’ve changed, and so have the “girls”.  Sizing can vary by brands and/or type as the picture below illustrates.

bra fit 9

That’s what happens to the “girls”.  You’ve had children, you gained and/or lost weight, you do weight training (which helps to keep the girls perky) and you are over the age of 35. Some people suggest you measure yourself at least once a year.

After you find the correct fit and make your purchase, it is important that you take care of your bras.  Most women do not hand wash anything now.  If you are washing bras along with everything else you need to put them in a lingerie bag and wash them on the delicate cycle.  This will help the bra keep its shape.  If you have a place to let them dry naturally that will help with the longevity of the bras.

I decided it was time to buy, and lo and behold, the bra lady as I like to call her was my former student.  She measured, looked and remeasured.  Then came back with a group of bras for me to try on.  The very first one was not what she thought it should be.  Even though it was the size she measured, she did not like the fit.  She had me raise my arms up, then outward, she tugged on straps–then went outside and came back with a different size in the same bra.

After the initial sticker shock (I am a bargain shopper) I left Dillard’s with new Wacoal bras, to go along with my clean report from the mammograms, sonograms and the MRI’s.

Remember “thisisyourbestyear”.  Don’t forget to have your girls checked out.
