The Stimulating Donna Brazile

20160225_190253Some people know how to work a room, but most don’t know how to work a room with facts, humility, laughter and everything in between.  Well they should meet Ms. Donna Brazile–she knows how to work not only a room, but an auditorium filled to the rafters during the Maverick Speakers Series at the University of Texas Arlington.

She entered the room on the heels of being introduced by her friend, Texas State Senator, 20160225_193322Royce West.  Ms. Brazile showcased her southern roots by first thanking the people of Texas for all they did for the people of New Orleans who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina.  This thank you set the tone of her talk.  This woman who has talked with all kinds of people–from the man on the street to the president of the United States (lots of presidents) thanked us for doing something we were supposed to do.

Then she preceded to teach us a lesson about politics with laughter, and we all know that if this years elections were not so serious, they would be the best comedy shows  around. Even when she talked of some candidates, she did so without a mean bone in her body.

But my favorite time was when the audience was given an opportunity to ask questions.  This was when the teacher came out of Donna Brazile. The people asking questions were the millennials, who were looking for answers. Ms. Brazile gave them her take on topics, her wisdom, her encouragement and her hope for them. She talked with them, laughed with them, and in her typical warm way even scolded them about their duty to vote.

You Never Know ……. Be Prepared.

I always tell my students “you never know who you might run into–always be prepared”.  Today I ran into Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.

Wild Women Luncheon

Old and new–young and old were in attendance as the Honorable Kathleen Hicks presided over the Wild Women Luncheon.

So many wonderful Tarrant County women were in attendance. The Honorable Senfronia Thompson of Houston was the featured speaker. She was all that and more than a bag of chips. Ms. Deborah Peoples is the president of the Tarrant County Democratic Party, and she is indeed a “wild woman” on a mission.

Ruby Dee–More Than An Actress

Ms. Ruby Dee was so much more than just an actress.  She fought for human rights way before it was fashionable.

Learning All the Time

My friend Meryl and I are always looking for something fun to do,  and today we found our activity. The Schieffer Symposium at Texas Christian University always features some of the best journalists in the nation. This year was no exception.  Along with Bob Schieffer commentating there was Fred Barnes from The Weekly Standard,  Clarissa Ward, CBS News Foreign Correspondent,  Nancy Youssef, Middle East Bureau Chief, McClatchy Newspapers and Charlie Rose, Co-host of CBS This Morning and Person to Person.

I have always thought you should learn something every day and today was no exception.  The panel was outstanding, funny and informative.

Below are scenes from the event.

Celebration and Civic Duty

Just watched the debates. I found nothing new. I have not changed my vote. I had to watch it late because I went to the Anthony Hamilton concert. Wow! It was so good. His opening act was Estelle.
