Top Read Posts Of 2015

It has been a wonderful year, talking and discussing so many different topics with you the readers.  Your comments have been funny, informative, creative and given me ideas of other topics.  “thisisyourbestyear” is about us and our journey.

Our top 5 posts of 2015 are as varied as you the readers, but in each one of them there is a strong woman of a certain age somewhere.  Here’s the list.

  • #5  A House Where “Sunny” Shines Bright  Mrs. Sunny Graham is a dynamic businesswoman, entrepreneur, wife and mother.  Her most endearing quality was that she is an extraordinary mentor who is always giving back.  Her story is a great American story of hard work and determination.   Her post is:  https://thisisyourbestyear.com/2015/11/05/a-house-where-sunny-shines-bright/
  • #4 Interview With The Artistic Director Of The Dallas Black Dance Theater–April Berry  Ms. Berry is a former dancer who was stepping into some very big shoes when she took over the helm of the Dallas Black Dance Theater.  Her journey to this position highlights her passion for dance.  Her vision for the Dallas Black Dance Theater is a labor of love.  Her post is:  https://thisisyourbestyear.com/2014/12/18/interview-with-the-artistic-director-of-the-dallas-black-dance-theater-april-berry/
  • #3 Breast Cancer Awareness–Prayers For Paulette And Her 8 Children  This post started when I noticed Paulette on Facebook, and could not believe that she had 8 children.  This is a story in itself.  Paulette Leaphart  is a beautiful woman inside and outside.  She is fighter, she is a warrior.  She is taking on breast cancer.  Her story is of faith in God.  Her post is:  https://thisisyourbestyear.com/2015/10/10/breast-cancer-awareness-prayers-for-paulette-and-her-8-children/
  • #2 MegaFest 2015 August 20-22 in Dallas, Texas  Bishop T. D. Jakes held a press conference with the city leaders of Dallas to announce MegaFest would again be held in Dallas.  First Lady Serita Jakes was there to not only lend support, but to let them know of the many activities that were for the entire family and some that were just for women.  Their post is:  https://thisisyourbestyear.com/2015/01/22/megafest-2015-augst-21-22-in-dallas-texas/
  • #1 Old Ladies And Crazies  Can I just say that the old, crazy ladies in the post are my heroes.  They epitomize what “thisisyourbestyear” is about.  We may be women of a certain age, but we are not the same.  We do not fit a particular mold.  Mrs. Inda Lou Lambert Schell did not let the death of her husband deter her, she decided to travel just like they had planned.  She went on with her life.  Her post is:  https://thisisyourbestyear.com/2015/07/05/old-ladies-and-crazies/

Weekend At The Delta Street Inn B&B

I’ve always liked getaways that are sort of spur of the moment. When my friend said let’s go, I was packed and ready to travel.  With Christmas music blaring, we were off. Going to Jefferson, Texas to stay at the Delta Street Inn B&B was a complete joy.  Since the two of us like history, staying in a historical house was really interesting.  The owners Bob and Pam make each guest feel right at home. The weekend had great food, wine, conversation and especially great friendship.

AMAL CLOONEY TO KEYNOTE WINGS LUNCHEON BENEFITING NEW FRIENDS NEW LIFE ON APRIL 14

Internationally Known Attorney and Human Rights Activist Shares Nonprofit’s Passion to Protect Women and Children, Combat Human Trafficking and Provide Healing and Hope

Clooney

(From New Friends New Life) New Friends New Life, a nonprofit organization that restores and empowers formerly trafficked girls and sexually exploited women and children, announces that Amal Clooney will headline its 13th Annual WINGS Luncheon on Thursday, April 14, 2016, at the Hilton Anatole Dallas.  She and her husband, famed actor and director, George Clooney, share a passion for philanthropic work with a focus on protecting human rights.  This will be her first trip to Dallas.

The Honorable Jeanne Johnson Phillips will serve as luncheon chair for the second year in a row.  Honorary Co-Chairs the former First Lady Laura Bush and Ruth Altshuler, also in their second year with the WINGS Luncheon, are joined this year by Caren Prothro and Annette Simmons as well as Board Chair Nancy Ann Hunt.

“As a human rights activist on a global scale, Amal Clooney is a perfect voice to advocate against a crime that is happening in our own backyard,” said Jeanne Johnson Phillips.  “The subject of sex trafficking and the sex industry as a whole were rarely spoken of just a few years ago, but thanks to the incredible work of organizations like New Friends New Life and a corporate community that is willing to step forward with funding, we are making huge strides to end human trafficking in Dallas and throughout Texas and empower its survivors. Clooney’s knowledge, experience, and presentation will help us educate the community and send a strong message that Dallas is a no tolerance zone for human trafficking as we strive to protect our children, an estimated 400 teens on the streets each night – the most vulnerable targets of human traffickers.”

A Lebanese-British barrister, human rights activist, philanthropist, and author, Amal Clooney’s long and accomplished career in the fields of international law and human rights have won her international acclaim. Her recent work as of 2015 has been in the field of advocating for the protection of women against physical and sexual violence in combat zones.

Serving more than 1,200 women and children annually, New Friends New Life provides holistic services for sexually exploited girls, women, and their children including access to education, job training, interim financial assistance, mental health and spiritual support.  By partnering with law enforcement, corporate sponsors, community organizations and individual donors and volunteers, New Friends New Life helps to provide legal assistance, medical services, budget counseling, job-readiness training, and educational opportunities. The nonprofit’s High Risk and Trafficked Teen Girls Program offers sexual abuse recovery groups for adolescents, teaching girls, ages 12 to 17, how to define, recognize, and ultimately recover from abuse.  The program is an intervention and prevention effort to help girls avoid a lifetime of exploitation as human trafficking victims.

Past WINGS luncheon speakers have included Kevin Costner, Sally Field, Barbara P. Bush, Nicholas Sparks, and Harriet Miers.

Sponsorships are available, ranging from $2,000 to $100,000.  Contact Kelly Cruse, wings@newfriendsnewlife.org, (214) 965-0935.

Christmas Gifts

As we mature, it seems that people we love find it hard to find Christmas presents that we like.  They aren’t quite sure that they have selected the one gift that we will really enjoy.  Our taste in clothing and such may have changed, we have decided that more is not always the way to go.

Let’s talk about gifts that are not your run of the mill gifts, but they might make some of us happy.  We’re just giving people hints at what we might like.

makeup artist

  • At home makeup artist–someone to do your makeup for you.  I know that we can go to the mall and have the nice lady at the counter do our makeup, but we have to drive there and then go home.  It doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg.  Ask the lady at your favorite cosmetic counter if she would consider doing your makeup at your house, and the cost. If you use something like Mary Kay, ask your representative to do your makeup.  You can even have your friend whose makeup is always great to come in and work her magic.

hair at home 2

  • At home hair salon–well not really the entire salon, just the necessities and a few products. You know when you took that shower, how your hair was not the same, or you had it done the day before, and can’t quite get it like the stylist did.  Ask your favorite stylist to come and do their magic or ask your friend to do it.

Bed and Breakfast Getaway

  • Girlfriends getaway–must be at least 3 days and 2 nights.  What’s the point in going away if you get there, check in, eat dinner, go to bed, get up, eat breakfast and leave? Again 3 days and 2 nights This does not have to be at the Ritz Carlton, just somewhere you would enjoy.  If you want rest and relaxation, don’t get a place close to shopping or vice versa. It would be something special (I think) if you could rent an entire Bed and Breakfast for a girlfriends getaway.  How about a nice timeshare?

wine making class

  • Wine lover?  Can’t make it to a vineyard, how about a winemaking class where you make your own wine.  Then you bottle it and put your own personal label on–then drink it.
  • Lifestyle concierge–I did this for myself for Mother’s Day.  They can help you organize anything from closets to your life.  I have the name of a great one in the North Texas area.  You will be surprised at how little you need.  You will like the organization. These are just a few suggestions for gifts for women of a certain age.
