In With the New and Fixing the Old

Remember last post when I told you I got a new pair of Birkenstock sandals. They are really good walking sandals especially for those of us who do not have perfect feet. Well I was just about to throw the old pair out–they are at least 5 years old–at least. They have seen much better days, in fact they are so worn they make my feet hurt. I was putting them in the box that the new pair came in when I found a little insert and began to read. It said that you should “never” throw out a pair of Birkenstocks; they can almost always be repaired. Well you know that since I am a woman of a certain age, I am very frugal with my money. I went online to see if Fort Worth had an authorized Birkenstock store, and lo and behold there is one on Camp Bowie Boulevard. Since you have to prove things to me, I called to make sure they could repair my sandals, and they said that as long as the leather straps were good they could.

Well here are the way the shoes looked after he had made sure they could be repaired. Kind of sad, don’t you think?

He literally took the footbeddding out of the shoe to make sure it could be repaired.  Take a look at what he did.

Birenstock repair

He wanted to make sure that it was not cracked anywhere.  I was informed that he could indeed repair them.  It would take a week to repair and cost about half of what a new pair would cost. I’m thinking to myself that I might should send the new pair back.  Then I thought why not have a spare pair.

On my way out the door I spotted another brand of shoe–Think.  I talked with the sales clerk about them.  He told me that if I liked Birkenstock that I would like Think.  So I tried on a pair.  They are the ones below.

Think Shoes

I must admit, they are really comfortable.  They are on par with Birkenstock and might be a little ahead of them in the comfort range.  I can’t really say for sure since I only had them on for a few minutes.  I will give them credit though, they have a complete line from flats, sandals, booties, pumps and more.  They cost about twice as much as Birkenstocks.  I do not know if they have the same policy on repair.  It seems that their website for the United States is down.  You can buy them at Nordstrom Department Stores also from online stores such as Zappos and others.

My Birkenstocks will be repaired next week, and I will let you know how they look.  If you are in the mood for comfortable shoes and you live in the Fort Worth, Texas area go by Take 5 Birkenstock.  They are located at 6108 Camp Bowie, Blvd., Fort Worth, Texas 76116.  You can also reach them at 817.989.2475.

I don’t know about you, but when my feet hurt, I hurt all over.  Remember “thisisyourbestyear”.

Skin Care At Whole Foods

I am always looking for products that work. It is not about the cost–remember Ponds? If it works then it’s a good thing. Where I purchase the product doesn’t matter either. I can get it from the discount store, online or at a high end store–it just needs to work.

Recently I was on my way back to Whole Foods to pick up the facial cleanser that I was using at the time. Yes, I said Whole Foods. They are very helpful there which is always a good selling point for me. You know when I got there, they were out and thought they might get some in the following week. Well Whole Foods is not down the street from me, it is a little drive. I informed the sales associate that I needed something to clean my face with, but I also needed something that would not leave me feeling dry. After talking more, she sold me on a product that I have sense fallen in love with.

Exercising & Genital Care

Very informative article for women, especially women of a certain age. Remember “thisisyourbestyear”.

Women's Therapy Center -- the blog

Spring brings with it a renewed energy for exercising, indoors or outdoors.  Swimming, cycling, Zumba-ing, running, power walking, etc., — all sporting activities should include proper genital care to prevent irritation.  It would be a shame to forgo working out because of the fear of ‘how will my genitals/vulva/vagina react…’

For water sports, you’d want to consider the drying effect of treated (chemicals) water in pools or salty waters in the ocean.  Using a vaginal moisturizer (i.e. Replens, RepHresh, Vagisil Moisturizer, etc.) at bedtime post-swim is an easy solution.  You may also want to avoid sitting for hours in a hot, sweaty bathing suit, a dark and moist environment that may be a breeding ground for a yeast infection.

If your choice activity includes sitting on a surface for a long while, such as cycling, biking, horseback riding, rowing, gym machines, etc., you may want to prevent…

Every Once In A While You Need To Enjoy The Quiet

image

Mama’s Office–Where Life Long Decisions Were Made

Everything was done in the kitchen of our home. When were younger, we practiced our reading at the kitchen table. Mama would be cooking and we would be reading out loud. I still wonder how she knew the words before we did. As we continued our education even college homework would be done at that table.

When my sister and I did our 4-H projects, the kitchen table became our workshop with everything from sewing machines to podiums. Mama was a leader in our 4-H club so we practiced everything there.

I remember the day we got a new dishwasher. Everyone was excited, even me. I had turned about 12 and thought that making pretend milkshakes in the soapy water was fun. Little did I know that I would forever be the dishwasher in our family. I remember that I would wash and mama would dry while my sister did her homework at the table. If my dad was home from work, he would be watching the Huntley Brinkley report while we did the dishes. My brother got out of washing dishes because mama believed that cleanliness was indeed next to Godliness. I remember the day that he popped me on the behind with the towel that he was drying the dishes with; it was the last time he was allowed to do anything in the kitchen except eat.

The smell of cooking was always prevalent in our kitchen even though both my parents worked full-time as educators. Mama had been a home economics major in college so everything was homemade from potato chips, wonderful cakes and pies and all that was in between.

One of my fondest memories is when my mother became my friend. She drank coffee every morning and some evenings at the kitchen table. I had always drank a milking cup of coffee as a child. One Saturday as she sat at the kitchen table reading the paper, I joined her for what would become “our time”. For the rest of her life, if I was home, I would make coffee and we would talk, sometimes our neighbors Miss Callie and Miss Adell would join us. Over the years to come at that table, we talked about high school graduation, going off to college, the death of daddy, how would she cope, my sister going off to college-mama in the house alone. My husband even asked her for my hand in marriage at the kitchen table. Grandchildren learned what the word “no” really meant at that table.

As I think back over these times, it is amazing that people now have to have libraries, great rooms, offices, etc., to do different activities. Mama did it all at the kitchen table.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms who solve all the problems of today at the kitchen table. Remember, “thisisyourbestyear”.
