Be Open–Be Informed

As women of a certain age, we tend to settle.  In one one word–Don’t.  Always be open to learning. Always be open to meeting new people.

Learning will keep the mind sharp. Take a class or go to a seminar. There are tons of free seminars about everything from taking care of parents to swing dancing.

Meet new people. Learn from them. I met some beautiful women at the Omega Psi Phi Ninth District Conference in Baton Rouge,  Louisiana.

I found soneone to hang out with in Dallas Fort Worth, and someone that is
putting together a cruise for girlfriends. Yes, I have put it on my calendar.

Life, learning nor making new friends should stop at 25. Remember “thisisyourbestyear”. Enjoy every moment.

Stroke or Headache?

At church Sunday I had to wear one of my alternative hair styles.  I decided on my newest Pixie Sherri Shepherd style. After braiding my hair then putting on my new wig cap and alternative hair I was out and ready for church.

Sitting in church my head begain to feel tight. It didn’t actually hurt,  but something was not right. A little later I started to have a tinge bit of a headache. I excused myself and went to the ladies room. It seemed as if my head was getting bigger–it just felt tight.  The alternative hair seemed to be fitting right except it felt tight around the crown of my head.  I thought as I looked in the mirror that maybe I could see stroke symptoms in my eyes, but I couldn’t.

I made it through service and raced to my car. There would be no fellowshiping after church. Each traffic light caught me as I raced home to the Aleve bottle.

As I turned into the garage I put my finger under the front of the alternative hair.  At that moment I knew I was not having a stroke. I hit the garage opener and drove in. As the door started to close I immediately took off the cute Pixie and the new wig cap with the extra wide band.

It was the wig cap band that was making my head feel like a rubber band was around it. I thanked God for no stroke and immediately found the old wig cap. Sometimes well worn is more comfortable than new.

Research, Review–Then Buy New Smart Phone

Thank you guys and my friends on Facebook for your input on which smart phone I should get.  I loved my HTC Inspire, but it got sick and was about to die–I had it for over 2 years, and still did not use all of the features.  I had, however, gotten to where I could do  “thisisyourbestyear” on it. It took me a while before I decided to buy the HTC Inspire, it fit my needs at the time.

HTC Inspire

That’s how I am; I don’t just go out and get something because it is  new.  I try to make purchases that make sense because I know I will keep whatever it is  for a while.

Cell phone 3Once upon a time we purchased phones because of the way they looked, since they basically did the same things.  I had to have Motorola Razr in red of course.  I really didn’t care what it could do–it looked good.  It still looks good to me.

Now purchasing a smart phone is like purchasing a car (Big White, my car has over 180,000 miles and I’m praying for another 20,000).   You must make an informed choice.  Phones today do this and that, but what are you going to use the phone for?

I’m going to use my phone for everything. I wanted something that was a cross between a tablet, laptop and cell phone. Since just about everything can be done electronically, I know I must keep up-to-date.  I still have my Dell PC which sits on my desk with my comfy chair, and my cute Dell XPS 13 laptop which I truly love.

I decided after much research on the Samsung Galaxy Note II.  It has everything and way more than I want–I love the keyboard.  I haven’t had it long enough to tell you all the bells and whistles that it has, but the ones that I have played with are just great.

Galaxy Note 2--4As time goes on I will keep you informed on how well the Galaxy Note II and I are doing.  I know that real soon there will be a Galaxy Note III, IV and even V and beyond.   This does not matter to me because I purchase for the long run; just because they make it, I don’t have to be the first on the block to have it.

Remember “thisisyourbestyear”.  Make informed decisions–as stated before as women of a certain age, we must watch our finances.

Finances and Fashion

As a woman of a certain age I have learned to watch my finances. When I go on a trip I don’t buy the first thing that catches my attention.  While vacationing with the hubby in Hot Springs, Arkansas I ran across these scarves that I liked. In fact I saw the scarves in two different versions. Take a look at them below.   The scarf below seems a little bit more casual than some of the others that I found.

After looking at them, I found that the jewelry did not always need to be exactly the same.  As you can see with the one below, the sides are different.

This one is softer. Either one is lovely, it is what you prefer when choosing items to wear.  As women of a certain age, we don’t need things just hanging in the closet or folded in the drawer somewhere. We have so many other things to do with our money.

Above is another example of the lighter fabric scarf. I liked them all. As I stated before, I watch my finances. I have decided that my sorority sister/workout buddy and I can make these.  We are always trying to do something different.  How hard can it be?

making jewelry scarves

I love the one below, and it seems really simple to make. It should be a lot of fun trying my hand at this. If making them doesn’t work out, at least I got a few friends together for a little “girl talk” which is always fun.

We all have costume jewelry and scarves just sitting there from years gone by. I have scarves that I have never worn, and I also have those that I wore the first time they were popular–you know how long ago that has been. There is jewelry that I purchased because for some reason that I can’t think of now I just had to have it. There is that necklace that my youngest purchased from Santa’s Secret Workshop in elementary school. You know items that mean a lot, but you don’t wear anymore and you can’t part with.costume jewelry 2This will become my new project. If you like the scarf idea and would rather purchase them here are the two places in Hot Springs, Arkansas that carry them. You can find both places on Facebook. They have other wonderful items also. I did purchase a Pretty Angel dress in green that I wear as a top over my white jeans. Hey I got the idea from LisaRaye.

Remember “thisisyourbestyear”, and watch your finances.

Scarves can be found at Chez Julie’ Gifts and Petals, Purses, Etc., in Hot Springs, Arkansas.  They are both on Facebook and will ship.

Catching Up With Old Friends–Spring Break Reading

As a woman of a certain age, I tend to lose touch with some of my friends.  It seems that all of us are busy going here and there–making sure that everyone is happy and content.  It seems that most of my friends are well into their careers or starting new ones.  While on Spring Break in Hot Springs Arkansas, I have decided to invite my friends to go with my husband and me.  He doesn’t mind because they don’t take up that much room and are very quiet.  I even invited someone who I wanted to meet.  Yes, I invited Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.  She has been someone who has always fascinated me because she is a strong woman of a certain age.

Sonia Sotomayor

Justice Sotomayor is woman who like most of us has hit her stride as she has matured. I think her story will be one that will enlighten me, and also one that I will enjoy.

Oprah and I have had to keep in touch with each other by way of “Oprah’s Next Chapter” which I watch every week.  She keeps me informed about the in’s and out’s of some of my favorite people–loved the show with Wayans family  (if you haven’t seen that one, it is wonderful).  I just felt it was time we sat down and had a girl-to-girl conversation so I invited O magazine to come along.  We’re going to talk about everything.  We’re going to start in the morning with a cup of coffee and end the day with a glass of wine.

I had to invite my old friend Ebony magazine.  Ebony has been there for me when no one else was there.  She has seen me through all the stages of my life.  Sometimes we tend to forget those that were there through it all. Desiree Rogers has done a wonderful job reinventing Ebony, but keeping it true to it’s roots.

Since I am on into my second act of life, I always try to know what to do with my money so that I can continue to do some of the things that I like to do so I bought along Money magazine. It has helped me try to insure that even as I mature even more I will be okay financially.  I love the little financial quizzes.

My better half loves to drive wherever we go, and my girlfriend Avis and I are always up for a road trip.  They can be so much fun when you don’t have an agenda, and time is not an option so I bought along Texas Highways magazine.

I truly miss Susan Taylor, you know the “In the Spirit” lady.  She was one of the reasons that I loved Essence magazine.  Essence has changed, as I have too, but it still talks to me about the beauty and the intelligence of “me”.  Can you believe Tia and Tamera are married with children.

Of course every woman of a certain age should have More magazine on their night stand.  It is for and about us.  This year our first lady, Michelle Obama will get her AARP card.  Their magazine is really helpful.  It talks about money, lifestyle, travel and more–I like it.

I live in Fort Worth, Texas–the best in the West so I have to bring along the city magazine which is one of my favorites.  I say this with tongue in cheek.  I have had a running battle with them to put my alma mater correctly in the colleges/university issue.  Somehow they can’t seem to understand that Texas A&M Commerce has one of the best undergraduate and graduate programs in the state.  I keep telling them and will continue until they get it right.  Even with that, they have the in’s and out’s of the city, and they are a wonderful city guide for Fort Worth and Arlington.

Departure magazine let’s me dream and Robb Report makes me wish.  These two are my sister’s.  They take me away to places that I want to go to.  I love the trips they take me on.  Endless Vacations magazine says it all–no need to explain.

Since I’m about to get to know my friends again, I also bought my music.  I don’t want to disturb my hubby as my girls and I have fun.

When the girls and I get to talking, we can look at the lake, and just relax.  There are even places that we can get our exercise on–walking trails.  We just need to bundle up and get moving.

While I’m talking with the girls, I will have to do a little work too.  I will have to tell them my girlfriend Britine Burton is running for the Arlington Independent School District School Board, and believe it or not I’m trying to assist her.  I’ve bought along a couple of pieces that I need to proofread.  This will not take long, then I can get back to my guests.

New friends are wonderful, but you can just be yourself with old friends.  Remember “thisisyourbestyear“.

Lunch With Chef Tre Wilcox

Well Weight Watchers starts again tomorrow in full force, but I do have to say thank you to them.  If it was not for Weight Watchers, I would not have been able to enjoy my lunch with Chef Tre Wilcox.  I would have eaten it, but I would feel guilty–not this time.  Love you Weight Watchers and my trainer Marsha Taplett owner of So Fit.

Now on to the chef, I mean the food.  Hey, they were one in the same.  I had a ball with my sister Carol and a mother and daughter duo from Dallas.  I know you have all heard of Chef Tre Wilcox who participated twice on Top Chef.

The man can cook.  We have “lunch and learn” at work.  If the lunches had Chef Tre cooking–well they would be very well attended. He prepared a 4 course lunch complete with a cocktail and/or wine.

While he cooked, he explained the dish that he was preparing.  He told us the ins and outs of the dish, and why he chose certain varieties of oils, vinegars and other ingredients. I kept looking for the gas range–induction was his choice.

It was time to go.  I was informed, full and happy!  Oh, I also left with a box of chocolates from Chocolate Secrets. The man gives candy too!

Remember “thisisyourbestyear“.  You may be a woman of a certain age, but reading the menu takes on a different meaning when having fun.

You can get in touch with Chef Tre at and Chocolate Secrets at

After Illness do Wellness

While looking through the bill drawer I found a gift card for a massage that I had not used. I called Perfect Touch Day Spa and upgraded it–I have been sick you know. I could not wait to leave work on Thursday to start my afternoon of relaxing. The picture says it all. We must take care of ourselves. Remember, “thisisyourbestyear”.
